| CHEESE HEADS IN LOVE |

Cheese is milk's leap
to immortality.
Clifton Fadiman
We are
Cheddar
our firm, whole milk sensibility
melting in a bed
of sizzling whole wheat toast.
Too old to be Colby or Mozzarella,
it's cream that shapes this slick butterfat love
or we could not melt and slide this way
nor brown this curvy casserole
of hips and thighs.
Wrapped
and horizontally
bedded together for years
we are changed
but as old wine, age becomes us;
and if, in our common dreams,
we would be more:
"Havarti, Gouda, Edam, Brie,"
whisper the soft sounds of inner springs.
In the dark it can be so;
dark is good for cheese. |
